The curtains opened, and there I stood-part “Gleamer,” part “Shader.” Those labels didn’t capture who we were, but tonight they symbolized the divide I was determined to bridge.

The audience erupted, as I’d predicted. My play shook up preconceptions, provoking reactions from thrilled to angry to confused. It was meant to awaken them, even if it wasn’t comfortable.

Tonash found the director’s face. He nodded, saying without words we’d done it. We’d dreamed up this play to show people the way we were meant to be -not those parody versions of “Shade” and “Gleam,” but the messy, beautiful reality. And here we were, about to change everything.

Storming out or staring in shock, they grappled with my challenge. I had to speak before they stopped listening, worry fading next to why I was here. Everything depended on getting through.

A girl with bright eyes understood what I was trying to say. This play was for her, and others wanting life to be different. I smiled, sharing a vision, and began.

“Too long we’ve lived blind, as though we’re nothing alike…”

She leaned in as my words sparked the dream of unity I’d poured into this night. Others caught flame, glimpsing what it might mean. I went on, lines about one person and one city again, tomorrow remade.

By the end, more started to believe. I saw the way this play broke through walls between us, written in their eyes. Where we went next was up to them. But the fire I’d lit would live on in hearts willing to share its light, guiding the way to unity, to home at last. Our future began tonight.
