Edvar was painting the walls of his new office, fine drops of white on his worn hoodie, as Zahn entered the office.

After the fires, I decided it was time to finally open the private investigation agency I’d been planning for years. But I didn’t want to operate out of the Shade where I grew up. I wanted a space on the border between Shade and Gleam, on the Beach. I wanted to show people a kid from the Shade could do business with anyone in this city, no matter what side of town they were from.

Zahn raised an eyebrow at me. “A detective? I thought you didn’t like digging into other people’s business.”

“It’s different when you’re getting paid to do the digging.” I shrugged, wiping paint off my hands with an old rag. “And it beats doing odd jobs. I’m tired of just scraping by.”

Zahn grinned, picking up a spare brush to help me finish the wall. “Good for you. ‘Bout time you started seeing your worth.”

I glanced around at the half-painted office, a wry smile crossing my face. “It’s a bit soon for a pat on the back. All I see is an empty room and a lot of work left to do.”

“All you see is an ’empty room’?” Zahn asked. “I see a place where anyone in the city can go for help. I see hope.”

“And if no one comes?” I scratched my cheek, flecks of paint drifting away. “What if they’re right, and I can’t make it work?”

“They’re not right.” Zahn shook his head. “You’ve got a dream and the guts to make it real. That’s enough for me to bet on.”

I noticed a stray droplet of paint on the floor across the room. With a subtle flick of shadow from my fingertips, I lifted the droplet and brought it over to drop in the bin.

Zahn had faith enough for the both of us, it seemed.
