Zahn

The perpetual gloom of the Shade did little to dampen the excited spirits of the city’s children. Word had spread that Zahn, the quiet firefighter gifted with power over water, had once again created a Winter Wonderland in the town square.

Zahn stood in the center of the square, eyes closed, arms raised as if conducting an orchestra. His gift flowed through him, infusing the surrounding area. The stone square transformed into a sea of ice that glimmered with hints of purple and blue. An enormous ice castle rose in the center, towers climbing up 20 feet into the misty sky. A moat of ice surrounded the castle, perfect for skating.

The children gasped as they walked through rooms filled with exquisite ice furnishings, tea sets, and even ice sculptures of plates heaped with food. Two long ice chutes raced down from the tallest tower, twisting and turning before ending in massive snow piles, perfect for climbing and jumping.

A magnificent carousel spun nearby, crafted of translucent creatures. There were dragons and unicorns, jellyfish with trailing tentacles, winged horses, sea serpents, dolphins, and fish. Their colors glowed and shifted in the pale light. The children clamored to climb onto their favorite frozen beasts, clinging to icy manes, tails, fins, and wings with mittened hands.

Vendors lined the square, offering hot chocolate, cider, and treats to warm little hands. Craft stalls displayed scarves, mittens, and other wares. Throughout the square, crystals in shades of blue, green, and purple flickered with magical light.

Zahn’s gift flowed out of him like a dance, icy sculptures blossoming and unfolding at his command. His normally stoic face lit up with joy at the children’s delight. For a few hours, the worries and darkness of the Shade melted away, replaced by the simple wonder of childhood and the beauty of Zahn’s art.

I watched in amazement as Zahn poured his gift into creating this temporary escape into whimsy and magic. The Winter Wonderland shone like a beacon of hope that beauty and light could be found even in the gloom. For the space of a winter’s day, Zahn’s gift had brought the children of the Shade a small taste of wonder and joy
