Qadr strolled down the street, keeping an eye out for trouble. The city was quiet except for the usual sounds in the distance. Her client Alain rushed to unlock his shop, breathing easier once they were inside.

Qadr told Alain to wait as she checked the place out. He’d hired her after threats from another store owner, and for good reason. She knew her way around a fight, and the knives and gear she carried had the scars to prove it.

At 23, Qadr had worked hard to become a human shield. She used martial arts and street smarts to build a rep as someone no thug could get past.

The shop seemed empty. “We’re good,” she called, waving Alain over. He went behind the counter as she kept watch, senses attuned to details others might miss.

The soft rasp of fabric sliding over wood sounded from the back room. In seconds she flung out an arm – her gift snapped up, air tightening into a wall that deflected the blade flying toward Alain’s throat. She pinned the attacker in place, arms wrenched behind his back.

“Who paid you?” she asked, tone casual but firm. The thug strained against her grip and glared. She applied pressure to weak points until he spat out a name: “Tomas. The guy who runs the shop down the block.”

Sirens wailed as the neighborhood watch responded. The punk’s curses were cut short as they dragged him off to face charges for this and whatever else.

Alain emerged, anger fading under relief. “He’s gone, and I’ve got a name. However much you charge, it’s worth it.”

She nodded. “Just doing my job.” Once the cops had a confession, her work was through. Qadr wandered into the night, ready for the city’s next problem to solve. Keen senses and the will to act – that’s what she sold, and why people were willing to pay.
